Melbourne Singers of Gospel (MSG), formed in the early 2000’s is a secular, non-auditioned community-based choir. The choir, under the direction of Dr Darren Wicks, performs gospel, soul, blues, and songs of purpose across a range of genres with the transformative impact of a congregational choir.  The choir aspires to high standards of vocal technique, interpretation, and movement and importantly, provides its members the joy and benefits of singing together. MSG enjoys performing to a diverse range of audiences at both public and private engagements and actively seeks out opportunities to collaborate and study with a range of local and international artists.

About the Musical Director

Dr Darren Wicks has directed MSG for over a decade, is a vocalist, jazz pianist and choral conductor with a passion for working with singers and teachers. Darren runs a busy private studio, is active with numerous professional associations, is widely published and regularly presents at teacher conferences.

Collaborations

MSG’s Artist in Residence program enables choir members to work with significant artists from the USA over an intensive 2-3 week period annually to enhance the choir’s authentic gospel sound.  The artist introduces new repertoire, teaching methods and vocal technique and co-leads choir rehearsals and music camp. Other activities may include public workshops, recitals, professional development for leadership teams and artists, private tuition, masterclasses and recording.

The choir is also excited to work with other excellent and diverse directors on a one-off basis as the opportunity arises. Workshops include technique, repertoire, composition or masterclass tuition.
